Enough say about our country’s politics. Now, I want to comment about campus politics. IIUM had their SRC general election some time after the Chinese New Year break. Although, it had passed long time already, I don’t know why suddenly it came into my mind. So, I decided to write my views about it.
I am a student in Kulliyyah of Medicine. Like any other kulliyyah, Kulliyyah of Medicine was allocated with 2 seats. Both seats saw the contestant won uncontested. Besides Kulliyyah of Medicine, Kulliyah of Pharmacy, Kulliyyah of Dentistry and Kulliyyah of Sciences also saw no contest. I was a bit frustrated that there was no contest in my Kulliyyah. I was eager to play my role and determine our representative in SRC. To be honest, I am not surprise that there was no contest as the number of students in our kulliyyah does not exceed 500. It is a small faculty and we know each other. So, we tend to give way. This action is indeed sincere and is able to avoid any confrontation but from my point of view, it does not contribute in flourishing democracy. For me, it is important to expose us, as young leaders with democracy.
The reason why I said that is that I have a lot of friends who have passed 21 but yet to register as a voter. Therefore they were unable to vote in the last general election thus missed the opportunity to determine today’s political landscape. Most of them failed to understand their role and the important of their vote. For your information, all of them are educated persons. So, imagine those who are poorly educated.
Because of that, I am now considering to run for the 2 seats next year. I don’t want people to give free winning for me as it does not serve my purpose. I am not planning to win. It is a good start for me if I were to become a politician one day. However, the thing that stops me now is my studies. I am afraid that it will affect my studies and furthermore being a leader is a huge responsibility. But one once told me that if you keep on thinking of the risk, you won’t be moving ahead at all. For now, let just time tells.
Today’s front page news for all major newspapers is about an incident that took place in our parliament yesterday. A group of 22 men claiming to be Selangor Umno Youth members confronted DAP Chairman Karpal Singh just outside the Parliament tower block yesterday. The STAR reported that the incident took place around 2.45pm. The men surrounded Karpal Singh who is the Bukit Gelugor MP, shouting and demanding that he retract the word celaka which he had used in reference to Umno Youth during his debate speech on Wednesday. The STAR also reported that Karpal Singh said had called the police for help but no one came to his aid except for his party members.
I was shocked and regretted to hear about the incident. How such incident can took place in such a respectful place? The incident shows that the culture of gangsterism in us. Karpal Singh is a handicap individual and should not be treated such way. In fact, everyone be it normal healthy or handicap shoul be treated that way. I know that his remark has spark uneasiness for some, but there are proper ways to show our disagreement.
I agree with MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong. We are in a democratic society. Anyone is entitled to their views. You can agree to disagree but no one is above the law and cannot take the law into his own hands.
To all politicians, please show some level of maturity!!
I realize that I had not updated it for quite sometimes. The last political news posting was before BN took over Perak. It was way back. So, here I am to updates all of you about our country’s political situation. From my perspective, overall, our political situation is getting weird and funnier. Why? I tell you why.
Kedah
February 8, 2009, an assemblyman from PKR, YB Arumugam a/l Vengatarakoo quitted his post as Kedah’s EXCO and as Bukit Selambau assemblyman. Reasons for his resignation are unknown. I read a lot of online news and blogs. They gave a lot of speculations. Here, I choose not to make any speculations. His resignation paves way for a by-election in Kedah.
Perak
We will also going to see a by-election in Perak. Not because Perak’s DUN has been dissolved but it is because Bukit Gantang MP, YB Roslan Shaharum from PAS passed away on 8th February.
Now, about the change of government that had took place in Perak. On 4th February 2008, 3 assemblymen, 2 from PKR and 1 from DAP quitted their respective party and become “BN friendly independent”. At the same time, Bota assemblyman, who quit UMNO and joined PKR, rejoined UMNO. As a result, BN has a total of 28 assemblymen while Pakatan also has 28 assemblymen. But, BN has 3 “BN friendly independents”. Therefore, BN has about 31 assemblymen. Because of that, they have the majority. The next day, Deputy Prime Minister had sought audience with Sultan of Perak to form a new government. Sultan of Perak had asked the then Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Ir Nizar to resign which he refused. On 6th February 2009, new MB, Datuk Dr Zambry took oath of office. The event sparked a huge protest in front of Istana Kinta.
Now, the problem is whether the appointment of the new MB is in accordance with constitution or not. Pakatan claimed that Sultan has no rights to fire Menteri Besar. There’s only 2 ways to remove an MB that are the MB itself resign or by no confidence vote in the DUN. As expected, BN claimed Sultan has the power to do so. I am not a judge nor a lawyer or constitutional experts, I have no idea who is right and who is wrong. But, let just say that Pakatan is right. Why didn’t BN bring the motion of no confidence in DUN during the next sitting? Wouldn’t it be better as it will not create any confusion? After all, they have the majority.
Due to the “confusion”, Datuk Seri Ir. Nizar has filed an injunction in Kuala Lumpur High Court to declare himself still as an MB and the appointment of the new MB is invalid. The case is still going on. Pakatan does not stop there. The Speaker of Perak’s DUN has suspended the new MB for 18 months and his 6 EXCO for 12 months from attending DUN sitting. Because of that BN has 21 assemblymen and Pakatan has 28 assemblymen. Now, Pakatan has the majority and are planning to bring motion of no confidence in the next sitting, thus form government back. For the question whether the speaker has the power to do so, as expected, Pakatan said yes while BN said no. I have no idea. What I know is that I am really looking forward to see what happen in the next sitting.
Selangor
Another PKR assemblyman is under the lime light. Semi nude pictures of the Bukit Lanjan assemblyman, YB Elizabeth Wong, were circulated to the public by irresponsible individual. She has offered to quit his post as Selangor’s EXCO and as assemblymen but MB has yet to accept his resignation. She was told to be on leave until investigation on her case completed. If she resigns, there will be another by-election.
So, do you notice anything unique? There are 2 unique things.
1.The area where the by-elections will be held both start with “Bukit” and if by-elections are to be called in Selangor, it will also start with Bukit
2.The by-elections symbolize our multi-racial country. Bukit Gantang = Malay, Bukit Selambau = India and Bukit Lanjan = Chinese.
For your information, the by-election in Perak and Kedah will be held on 7th April. Lama lagi. But if you ask me who I think will win. I think Pakatan has better chance.
My father was in Kuantan from 22nd till 25th February 2009 to attend some workshop about demography organized by Lembaga Penduduk dan Pembangunan Keluarga Negara (LLPKN). He was the sole tenaga pengajar for the workshop. The workshop was held at Swiss Garden Hotel and Spa, Kuantan. The organizer provided him with room for 2 persons but my father came alone. So, he asked me to join him and of course I joined him:-). So, for 3 nights, I enjoyed staying in a hotel. I did not have the opportunity to go swimming in the pool. I have to study for tutorials. I have 5 tutorials this week. However, the greatest thing is the FOOD! My father did not just get room for 2, the room came with free breakfast, lunch and dinner. So, I really enjoyed eating all the great food. It was buffet style, so I eat and eat and eat until I’m full.
I don’t know what is wrong with me. I think I sleep a lot nowadays. To make the matter even worse, it does not seem to be enough. I still feel sleepy in class. I blame the boring lecture. Not the lecturer. Tak baik kutuk lecturer. They are our source of knowledge.
When I woke up, the first thing that came into my mind is “lps nie nak tido pkl brape plak lepas nie?”
Let me brief you a little bit about what is happening in Perak. Politics in Perak is under the limelight since the past few days. It started with Umno’s Bota assemblyman Datuk Nasarudin Hashim crossed over to PKR last week. Since the crossing over, PKR and Umno have been involved in a psychological war, with both accusing each other of trying to pinch their assemblymen. This is what The Star reported. The media also reported that Jamaluddin and Mohd Osman have not been seen in public since Nasarudin crossed over to PKR last Sunday. Speculation had been rife in Perak that the duos were going to resign from PKR.
So, for the past few days, I have been login into the internet almost 24/7 to keep myself updated. I just finish reading the online news.
From Malaysiakini
Perak speaker: Duo have resigned BREAKING NEWS! updated 10.48pm Perak state assembly speaker V Sivakumar had received the letters of resignation from the two PKR state representatives at about 5.45pm today.
From Utusan Malaysia Online
Dua ADUN PKR nafi letak jawatan KUALA LUMPUR 1 Feb. - Dua Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN) Perak daripada Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) malam ini menafikan meletakkan jawatan mereka, sepertimana yang diumumkan petang tadi.
From Berita Harian Online
As you can see, there are various stories. Which one is the correct one? I don’t know. Let just wait and see. If the duos happen to resign, it will pave the way for another by-election in the two constituencies. The question is: Is UMNO / BN is ready for another by-election?
To be honest, I am tired of this. Why can all parties involve stop all these nonsense and do your work! Maybe, why don’t we dissolve the parliament and have another general election. Let the people decide once again. But make sure, it is after next week. Hehehe. I am going to register myself as a voter next week! Can’t wait!
